Barabbas

“Take this one, and let Baraba go!” Luke 23:18 The Bible says: “But they all cried out in unison, saying: “Take this man, and release Barabbas to us!” (Barabbas was thrown into prison for some rebellion in the city and for murder) (see lines 18-19). Barabbas was a “stubborn prisoner” (Matthew 27:16), yet the people chose to release him. Imagine how he must have felt sitting in jail, found guilty and now facing his punishment.

We may not be notorious criminals, but we all make mistakes and are far from God’s best. We are all tempted and we can all make mistakes. Like Barabbas, we do not deserve freedom. But we have it. It is so thanks to God’s grace. The devil wants us to think that our sin means that we are imprisoned and imprisoned. But God has already won. We are set free, just like Barabbas, because Jesus took our place. Christ took away all our sins. All of them. He took them to the top of the hill called Calvary.

He died on the cross and our sins died with him. The Bible says: “Out of sheer generosity he has set us at his right hand.” A complete gift. He took us out of the mess we were in and restored us to what He always wanted us to be. And he did it through Jesus Christ. God sacrificed Jesus on the altar of the world to cleanse that world of sin. Our faith in Him brings us this purity”. (Romans 3:24-25).

So let us never forget the incredible gift of freedom that we have been given by God. Because of Jesus, we too are freed from punishment. What next? Spend some time thinking about Jesus taking your place. Why not listen to the words of the song “When I look at the cross” – the words can help you think about Jesus’ sacrifice. Bible: 2. Samuel 21-22, Acts 1
